Dear friends and neighbors. My name is Steve Durgin. In the fifteen years I have lived in Portsmouth, I have developed a true sense of gratitude for the good fortune of living in such a great city. It is with a genuine sense of civic obligation and duty that I ask for your vote. I want to serve you on the City Council. If you love this city as much as I do whether you own or rent, you are a valued member of this community. I want this city government to work for you!
I will work to:
- Establish and maintain accountable city government.
- Establish and maintain city government that respects you.
- Make sure new deals with developers and contractors are friendly to current residents.
- Create charter schools that expand education opportunity for students and teachers.
- Implement standards of budget formulation terminology that inform you, not deceive you.
- Yearly evaluations of departmental budgets. No more autopilot spending.
- Keep using the current middle school building as our middle school, no gut job renovations!
- Initiate discussion of new taxation/fee policies that won't drive residents/businesses away.
- Allow a true culture of art, outdoor activity and science enthusiasm to evolve in this city.
OWNERS AND RENTERS YOUR VOTE COUNTS!
50% of the housing in Portsmouth are rental units. When the landlords taxes go up, your rent will almost certainly go up. Renters, you have a big stake in well run city government. If you love this city, you might someday want to buy a house or condo unit here (like I did). I believe it is the obligation of this city government to acknowledge and respect the fact that you are a competent talented well intentioned citizen. In the interest of social stability and in service of the greater good, you should be the primary controller of your financial resources. I believe this is responsible public policy.
